Fans of high school soccer may have noticed a few familiar names come off the board today at the annual MLS SuperDraft.

The top overall pick for the Montreal Impact, Andrew Wenger of Duke, was the 2009 Gatorade Pennsylvania State Player of the Year and was a mainstay on the U.S. U-17 and U-20 National Teams throughout his high school career.

A trio of multi-time Gatorade State Player of the Year winners also went in the first round. Casey Townsend was the 2007 and ’08 winner in Michigan. He went on to play at Maryland and was selected No. 5 by Chivas USA. Chandler Hoffman was the ’08 and ’09 winner in Alabama. He went on to play at UCLA and was selected No. 13 by the Philadelphia Union. Enzo Martinez was the ’07, ’08 and ’09 winner in South Carolina. He went on to play at North Carolina and was selected No. 17 by Real Salt Lake.

The third overall pick, Kelyn Rowe, was featured in ESPNHS magazine in December of 2009 before going on to play at UCLA. You can read that feature here.

Stacy May-Johnson has been named the 2011 USA Softball Female Athlete of the Year while Greg Connell was selected as the Male Athlete of the Year, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today. Cheyenne Cordes has also been selected as the Athlete of the Year from the Junior Women’s National team program.

Rookie infielder May-Johnson (Reno, Nev./Iowa assistant coach), who saw time at shortstop and third base, came out of retirement in 2011 to make her first USA Softball Women’s National Team at 27-years-old. She started 27 of 28 games the United States played at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada, the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City and the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. While the red, white and blue finished second in Canada, where May-Johnson earned the Defensive Most Valuable Player award, the team won a fifth straight World Cup title and seventh consecutive Pan American Games gold medal.

“When you play on a really good team like the USA Softball Women’s National Team, it is easier to play well,” May-Johnson said. “It’s easier to play defense when you are behind a good pitcher who strikes everyone out. It’s easy to hit well when the people before you are on base and when the batters behind you are dangerous. Sometimes when you’re on a really good team, you win these neat awards like the USA Softball Female Athlete of the Year, but I know this award is not all for me. It’s the people around me that I have to thank for helping me perform at this level.”

At the plate, May-Johnson went 33-for-79 for .418 overall, ranking her first on the team in hits and at-bats while placing her third among national team members in batting average. She had four doubles, a triple and a team-high six home runs for a .722 slugging percentage. May-Johnson had a team-high 26 runs scored and a team-high 30 RBI, nine more than her nearest teammate.

Connell (Moultrie, Ga.), a rookie on the Men’s Slow Pitch National team, played in five of the team’s games at the McQuade Sr. Budweiser Charity Softball Tournament in Bismarck, N.D., the Team Cincinnati exhibitions in Cincinnati and exhibitions in Oklahoma City and also played Border Battle III against Canada in Oklahoma City. For the season, he was 29-for-34 (.853) with 25 runs scored and 27 RBI. He also hit 10 home runs in 2011.

“It is a great honor to be named the USA Softball Male Athlete of the Year. When you play softball, you work hard all year but you never expect to receive an award like this,” Connell said. “I was excited just getting selected to be one of the 15-men to play for the USA Softball Men’s Slow Pitch National team this year. To be chosen over the other 14 players, the best of the best in our sport, as the Athlete of the Year is just an honor. I’m very excited and am thankful for this opportunity.”…

The Major League Baseball Players Association, the owners and the league recently announced a new collective bargaining agreement, good through the 2016 season. There are varying flavors of opinion on the positives and negatives that may occur over the life of the deal, but the consensus is that the new rules concerning the First-Year Player Draft will have a certain impact on prep athletes.

These restrictions are likely to negatively impact the number of high school players that ultimately choose pro baseball, or baseball altogether.

Limited bonus money

Clubs are now limited on the total bonus money they spend in each draft, with a value being assigned to each particular draft pick through round 10. Bonuses starting in round 11 can’t be higher than $100,000 without that, too, counting against the total allotted pool.

Clubs can spend more than the value assigned to any pick, but can’t exceed their total aggregate cap without steep penalties, starting with a 75 percent tax on any overages and reaching as far as the surrendering of multiple draft choices the following year.

High school draftees will not be able to hold out for as much bonus money as in past years, especially those who may fall further in the draft than their talent warrants due to signability. Those players are likely headed for college, rather than starting their professional careers.

One scouting director of a club that drafts in the top 10 in the 2012 Draft said he agrees that the new rules aren’t likely push a significant percentage of the top prospects toward college or other sports, but added that “it’ll still take a lot of money to get them signed, leaving a lot less opportunity to sign later picks, even starting with sandwich or second-round choices.”

Put a football and baseball in front of Jameis Winston and ask him to pick which one he’d rather have in his hand.

To the Hueytown (Ala.) senior, it’s an easy decision. And it’s clearly something he’s thought about before.

“I will just juggle them,” said Winston. “I pick both.”

It’s a fitting answer for the 6-foot-4, 195-pound superstar since he’s been juggling both football and baseball throughout his high school career. And he has committed to Florida State to play both sports.

“It’s a blessing that God gave me this talent,” he said. “To have an opportunity to play at a top level in football and baseball is something I am very grateful for.”

Top level might be an understatement — Winston is elite within the high school spectrum.

Kim Klement/US PresswireHueytown (Ala.) senior quarterback Jameis Winston (left) was named MVP of the 2012 Under Armour All-America Game after throwing for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

On the football field, he’s a dynamic, dual-threat quarterback who’s rated the nation’s No. 1 signal-caller in the ESPNU 150 and was co-MVP at the Elite 11 finals last summer. This season, he threw for 2,424 yards and 28 touchdowns with just two interceptions and ran for 1,063 yards and 15 scores to earn a spot on the ESPNHS All-American team and snag Gatorade State Player of the Year honors.

And on Thursday night, he played in the Under Armour All-America Game on ESPN. Winston was named game MVP after completing 8-of-9 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns in leading his squad to a 49-16 victory.

Even though he is a natural setter, Victor’s Matt DeLong had no problem playing libero as a sophomore and junior. DeLong stepped into the starting setter role in 2011 and the Blue Devils continued their success, winning a second-straight state boys volleyball championship.

That’s why DeLong is the Daily Messenger’s 2011 Boys Volleyball Player of the Year.

DeLong felt the position change helped him have such a strong year.

“It was moving back to my normal position of setter and playing with the kids I’ve played with in club,” he said. “We had that connection and we fine tuned it a little bit.”

The senior wrapped up his fourth year of varsity volleyball for the Blue Devils. He also plays for the Victor Volleyball Club.

Coming off a state title in 2010, the Blue Devils were motivated at the beginning of the season.

“We were really ready to go,” DeLong said. “We knew we had lost a couple of key players. We knew it wouldn’t be as easy as it was last year and we had to work harder and play better.”

Victor won its fourth-consecutive Section 5 title by beating Brockport 3-1. DeLong had 48 assists and four aces in the match and was named to the all-tournament team.

The son of Kevin and Traci DeLong said the sectional title was the most memorable part of the run….

Before the 2010 season, James River coach Terry Ford conducted a customary open gym for returning players and anyone interested in joining the volleyball team. At Mitchell Ford’s invitation, Sam Albus attended.

“It was a humbling experience playing with those guys,” Albus said. “This is such a tough sport to pick up and all the guys I was playing with were amazing.”

Terry Ford saw a very good athlete with a lot of potential. In just his second year on the team, Albus has finished a dominating season by sweeping the Dominion District and Central Region top honors. He also is The Times-Dispatch All-Metro boys volleyball player of the year.

Albus, a senior, is the second consecutive Rapid to win, following Darren Kilby. Each led James River to the Group AAA state championship.

“I told Darren’s father at the start of the season I didn’t think we could win it again,” Ford said. “Over time, I started to think it wouldn’t be that crazy to win it again. The development of Sam is a big part of that.”…
